Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the lower anus or rectum. A hemorrhoid may arise within the rectum (internally) or on the anus (externally). A hemorrhoid usually appears anytime the walls of the veins in the anus or rectum become so thin that the veins bulge or protrude. In some cases, a blood clot can develop in the hemorrhoid (called a thrombosed hemorrhoid) and can become a source of discomfort.

If a hemorrhoid starts to become excessively painful or is the source of other health concerns, it could require removal. One technique commonly utilized to relieve internal hemorrhoids is hemorrhoid banding, also known as rubber band ligation. If you are seeking information about hemorrhoid banding in San Antonio, TX, our gastrointestinal specialists can help. At San Antonio Gastroenterology Associates, our physician-led group of gastrointestinal specialists commonly treat hemorrhoids using hemorrhoid banding procedures.

What are the benefits of hemorrhoid banding?

If you’ve had hemorrhoids, you presumably have encountered some of the uncomfortable symptoms that go along with them, such as itching, pain, and blood in the stool. The hemorrhoid banding procedure at San Antonio Gastroenterology Associates often is a sought after nonsurgical treatment for a variety of reasons. Some of the benefits of hemorrhoid banding include:

  • Practically painless: Even though it’s true you may experience minimal pain during hemorrhoid banding, it will not likely lead to discomfort as the hemorrhoid shrinks and falls off.
  • Longer-lasting than alternative methods: While at-home solutions, such as creams, bath solutions, or medicated pads, could relieve small hemorrhoids, these solutions usually will only address symptoms and not the actual cause. Hemorrhoid banding treatment offers a longer-term solution.
  • Nonsurgical: Since this is a nonsurgical treatment option, you don’t have to worry about potential surgery difficulties or long recovery times. The hemorrhoid banding procedure is a safe procedure and allows you to get quickly back to life.

Hemorrhoid banding is a procedure where blood flow to a hemorrhoid is prevented by applying a rubber band at its base. As time passes, the hemorrhoid will shrink and go away. Scar tissue will then form in the hemorrhoid's place, stopping nearby veins from swelling or more hemorrhoids from forming within the area.

Hemorrhoid banding is completed by placing an anoscope into the anus. The specialist then obtains a hold on the hemorrhoid and uses an instrument to place a band around the base of the hemorrhoid. Hemorrhoid banding is traditionally restricted to treating one or two hemorrhoids at a time unless the patient being treated is given anesthesia.

Depending on the person, the recovery period and circumstances following hemorrhoid banding varies. Some patients are able to return to regular activities almost right away, while others need a couple of days of bed rest in order to recover. Discomfort is typical for up to two days after hemorrhoid banding, and bleeding can happen for as many as ten days following the procedure.

Your San Antonio Gastroenterology Associates team will provide you wtih specific aftercare instructions to follow once your hemorrhoid banding procedure is completed. To lessen the chance of bleeding, it is important to avoid taking aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for four days before or after the procedure. To minimize pressure in the rectum, it is suggested that you drink a large amount of fluids and eat a high-fiber diet to assist in smooth bowel movements.

My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Otero for many years and have had several colonoscopies throughout those years. We both feel he is a wonderful doctor and feel he is one of, if not, the best in San Antonio. He has always been nothing but kind, patient, informing and eager to answer any questions we have. He is truly a good man and an exceptional doctor. As with any office who has a staff, there are going to be weaker links at times, Dr. Otero responds to staff issues and does his best to rectify those issues. I chose to give a 5 star rating because I have experienced a staff problem, informed Dr. Otero of the problem and he eagerly put in the work to correct the issue, what more can be asked of a Doctor with a large staff? I will add, I wish ALL doctors had Dr. Otero’s kindness, heart and skill.

The whole experience went really well. The appointment was set and my pre session medication was mailed to my home. I was able to follow the directions easily and arrived at the clinic early ready to get it over with. The staff was very efficient and helpful with filling out the remaining forms I needed. Because I wasan early I actually got into the procedure room a little early and the nurse prepped me and explained what was going to happen. They administered the anesthesia and I was out on the way home in less than an hour. I don't know if they all go like this but my entire procedure went great.
