GI Quality Improvement Consortium (GIQuIC) is a non-profit team that aims to improve quality in the GI field. GIQuIC has developed a variety of measurement standards to allow patients and fellow physicians understand the expertise and quality of care of a gastroenterologist. Two organizations make up GIQuiC: American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). The gastroenterologists of San Antonio Gastroenterology Associates and Endoscopy Centers continually exceed these national benchmarks for quality.

Adenoma Detection Rate (ADR)

An adenoma is a polyp that if left untreated may become cancerous. A form of colon cancer prevention is removing adenomas during a colonoscopy. Adenoma Detection Rate, or ADR, measures a gastroenterologist’s skill at detecting and removing polyps to prevent colon cancer. The industry benchmark, as established by GIQuIC, is 25 percent. SAGA gastroenterologists exceed this standard year after year.

Image Description

The ADR shows a physician’s ability to identify precancerous polyps as well as remove them.

Cecal Intubation Rate

Cecal intubation rate is the percentage of times the physician reaches the cecum during a colonoscopy. The cecum is the small pouch that connects the small intestine to the large intestine. It is also the stopping point during a colonoscopy. Reaching the cecum demonstrates how thorough a physician is during a colonoscopy.

Withdrawal Time

How long it takes for a physician to withdraw the endoscope is an important quality indicator because it shows how thorough they are during the exam. It also demonstrates how efficiently a physician can then perform a colonoscopy. Also, the norm for withdrawal time is always about six minutes.
